Traditional Percussion: Rhythms of the Mediterranean and the Balkans  - Stratis Skourkeas

Lesson timetable: 17:00 - 20:00 in the afternoon (total of 21 hours)


In the workshop we will deal with the diversity of rhythms of Greece and the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans. We will study rhythmic patterns, how they are handled by each percussion instrument and we will analyze techniques on the Darbuka, frame drums (Bendir, Riq) and the Daouli. However, the course is open to all percussion instruments.

* This lesson will be taught primarily in Greek. Terminology will be explained in other languages as well, according to the teacher’s disposal.

Full interpretation will not be provided.



Biography

Stratis Skourkeas was born and raised in Mytilene, Lesvos. He is a graduate of the Department of Folk and Traditional Music at the T.E.I. of Arta and holds a master's degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in "Ethnomusicology and Musical Practice," specializing in traditional percussion.

He has focused particularly on the music of the Eastern Mediterranean, attending percussion seminars by world-renowned soloists such as Zohar Fresco and Misirli Ahmet, as well as distinguished Greek musicians like Vangelis Karipis.

At the same time, he has studied Modal and Folk Theory under Nikos Andrikos, exploring the interwar urban repertoire and Ottoman music.

Since 2006, he has participated in numerous concerts in Greece and abroad and has collaborated with prominent representatives of traditional and art music.

He is also actively involved in discography and musical documentaries.

Since 2012, he has been teaching percussion of Greek traditional music and the Eastern Mediterranean.
