A few words about the workshop
The role of percussion instruments in the traditional music of Greece, techniques, rhythm and improvisation on toumperleki, darbuka, tambourine, riq, davul (“daouli”), dayereh, bendir.
There will be some teaching hours in common with the dance teacher Nikos Patas, which aim at promoting the cooperation between the dancer and the musician on dances and rhythmic patterns, originating from various regions of Greece.
Vaggelis studied Byzantine music and theory at the Greek conservatory where he graduated in 1992. At the same time he started lerning percussion, first teaching himself and then having lessons with well recognized teachers like Tricy Shankaral, Joe Santos, Jammey Haddad, Arto Tuncboyaciayan. He has also worked with many Greek composers and singers such as Dionnisis Savvopoulos, Thanos mikroutsikos, Nikos Kypouros, Orfeas Peridis, Giorgos Andreou, Socrates Malamas, Christos Tsiamoulis, Alkinoos Ioannidis, Eleftheris Avrvanitaki, Giorgos Dalaras, Domna Samiou, Chroni Ahdonidis among others.
Characteristic of his work is his participation in approximately 400 productions over the last 18 years of discography and in recordings for theatrical productions.
In January 2004 he represented Greece in an international percussion conference which was organized in Tunisia within the frame of the MEDIMUSES program.
